Side Hustle Promotion Why Not Both

Side Hustle Promotion Why Not Both The old model is dead. They just havent acknowledged it yet. The tenure-based, Ive put in my time. model doesnt work anymore.  Business is fast-paced and ever-changing.  Businesses are irrelevant, out of business, or sold every day. Only 50% of businesses with employees survive at least 5 years. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, Business Employment Dynamics.) Click To Tweet Do you want to pursue the work and pray model?  One where you put in the work and hope you get an annual 3% increase?  And pray that the company you work for doesnt downsize, sell, or become obsolete between now and retirement? Or are you the ambitious 20% who is willing to take your career and life in your own hands and tackle things head on? Yes, there is a place for those who just want to put in the work 9 to 5 and then go home and enjoy their life.  That is appropriate for 80% of the people who dont view their career as something that needs to be actively managed.  And when they find themselves in the unemployment line at 40 where the world has passed them by, and theyre having to retrain for a new career they never prepared for. Theyll be one of the people, like those today, who are unemployed or underemployed with no options other than incurring debt to go back to school or start over again at the bottom in a new industry.  And while that is happening theyre running up their credit card debt with a lifestyle that they can no longer support. So you say, Im not that person.  Im willing to put in the work to get ahead, make my own future happen, and not be left behind. Are you really? How serious are you? You really need to ask and answer that question.  Because to get ahead in your career or to start a side hustle/freelance business, or to start a new business idea, it takes commitment.  Commitment to get up at 5am to be the first in the office or get an hour or two in on your side hustle before your day job starts.  Commitment to work late to make that work project happen, or work on your business when youre tired at the end of the day and just want to kick back on the couch with a beer or some wine and binge-watch your favorite TV series. So lets look at how to break out and get ahead in the 9 to 5 work world. The 7 Things You Should Start Doing Today to Earn a Promotion 40 percent of millennials expect a promotion every one to two years. Click To Tweet In the dark ages (1950s and 60s) where the old work model was the standard, if you put in your time from 9 to 5, you would automatically progress through the organization and move up to the level that your ability to do the work, networking/ladder climbing expertise within the organization, and time would allow.  Then you would retire and die. Pretty simple, right? But now with a more mobile workforce who recognizes that employers are not loyal to you, a different approach is in order. So lets walk through the 7 Things. Passion If you like what you do, you will want to do more of it. If you do more of it, you are more inclined to get better at it, and if youre better at it, youre more inclined to get promoted. No way are you going to put in the hard hours necessary if you dont like what you do each day and like the people you work with. So if your job does not have that you either need to search within the organization for a new project opportunity or department that intrigues you, or start a side hustle that can help you bring in new skills that will make your day job more interesting or set you up for a future opportunity that you can be passionate about. Partner with your boss Having a positive relationship with your boss will ensure you at least have the opportunity to get ahead.  If you dont have that youre just kidding yourself if you think youre going to be promoted.  Your boss is often the lens through which those higher up in the organization view you.  A positive liking by your boss will ensure you are at least considered for promotion or interesting project work.  A dislike is a career killer. If you dont have that relationship, build it quickly or move on to a place you can build that. Go the extra mile As they say, there is never a traffic jam on the extra mile.  Heres some things you can do to set yourself apart from the pack of those who say they want a promotion but arent willing to put in the heavy lifting. Come in early or stay late (or both) particularly in your 20s when you dont have family commitments yet, time is your rocket fuel to compress time and launch your career. Volunteer for a new project being proactive is a necessary ingredient to being management material so develop it early. Help a coworker without being asked theyll remember that later Hang out with coworkers after work develop the common bond you have through work and get to know more about them and their interests Attend industry events youll be that informed go to person when you network outside your company Continue your education read, listen to podcasts, take courses to learn a skill at the local night school or community college, or get that next degree.  Do what youre passionate about learning or what is a requirement for the next rung on the corporate ladder so youre not left behind. Be part of the team Cheer your team members on be that positive influence. Mentor and be mentored by teaching others youll become better yourself and latching onto someone who is moving up through the organization may put you in a position to be pulled along up with them. Or finding someone high enough in the company who can help you avoid the pitfalls along the way will be invaluable. Track your progress Not an item that was mentioned in the article but something Ive found often neglected but then becomes critical at annual review, promotion, or finding a new job time.  And that is keeping a good record of your accomplishments.  Do that well and youll be able to easily ask the question, Why should we consider you for this position?  Youll have meaningful examples of how you contributed to propelling your current company forward in your current role and how that could translate into even more contribution in a higher role or with a new company.  Need examples and a formula to do that?  Find that One Thing here. So that is how you grow inside the company and make those promotions happen.  But there is another interesting statistic that caught my eye that indicates a new growth area  you could take that could further your career even more, or add that spark that your day job is missing, or lead to you starting a business of your own. Is freelancing for you? 1 in 3 workers earn their income through freelancing. Click To Tweet This is an amazing statistic since the public school system has long driven home that you must do good in school, go to college, and get a good job, and then when youre done the government will take care of you. But will it? As Millennials focus more on causes they believe in and lifestyle, the put-your-head-down-and-go mentality has ended.  And they are looking to contribute and earn in new ways. One of those ways is through freelancing or having side hustles. Whether that is driving with Uber.  Or tutoring high school students nights and weekends.  Or starting an internet-based business.  Or working a second job at a bar or local retailer in the evenings or around Christmas time to earn a little extra money.    Theyre not above hard work.  They just want to do it on their terms. Is this you?  Are you willing to commit to putting your social life on the back burner for a while to build that nest egg to buy your first house?  Or to pay off the student loan debt anchor sooner so you can enjoy life?  Or to learn marketable skills to get ahead in your job?  Or to start that business that will create the ultimate lifestyle so you dont have to just get by? If that is you but you dont know where to start.  Or if you have started but are struggling with how to balance things or need guidance on what is most important to focus on.  Contact me and we can get you started down that path that is right for you. How to Write a Resume For a Homeschooler

How to Write a Resume For a HomeschoolerAre you a homeschooled child and you are wondering how to write a resume? Do you need help putting together your own essay or letter? If this is the case, here is a quick guide for writing a resume. Resumes are not just a page that has to be filled out and given to your employer. It is something that must be very well thought out in order to get a job. After all, what happens if you do not get a job after you have gone through the hiring process? For one thing, you could end up making it very difficult for yourself to get your hands on the position that you want when you have a difficult time filling out your resume. That could happen with any one of the aforementioned reasons. If you get stuck, you can always seek the advice of someone who has done it before.Another good idea would be to visit your school's guidance counselor to discuss your situation with them. They will know about all the different procedures for changing your grades in a publ ic school system, so they may be able to suggest ways that you can accomplish this while still on a timetable. These counselors are usually on the lookout for homeschoolers who are in need of help. This is not to say that your child will not be interested in obtaining a good job with little effort on your part. Of course, they would love the thought. However, having a plan will help them go into their future with a more positive mindset and without the fear of rejection. The primary goal of having a resume and a good career planning should not be lost to the homeschooler. When you start out on your plan, you will find out that there are many things that you can do that will make your life easier and give you the boost that you need. Even if you do not get hired right away, having a resume that you have already completed can still help you to acquire the degree you wanted in the first place. They are perfect for planning future employment. If you are considering going back to school, co nsider having the proper career planning. After all, the benefits that are associated with going back to school are often far greater than the benefits of completing the education process while you are at home. Not only are you required to attend college, but you will also be required to complete further education in order to receive a degree, which means that you will be completing all the necessary requirements for further schooling while you are at home!

Bill Gates Advice Manager amp; Worker Tips to Boost Careers

Bill Gates Advice Manager amp; Worker Tips to Boost Careers Bill Gates, the richest man on earth and one of the world’s leading philanthropists, has a lot of wisdom to impart to the masses. And thanks to podcasts, it’s never been easier to access it. Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn, has a new podcast in which he talks to his friends, who happen to be the most important people in tech, about what they’ve learned along their journeys â€" and what lessons they can teach the rest of us. In the most recent episode, Hoffman asked Bill Gates what he would tell his younger self about hiring. Gates’ answer reveals something about the best way to position yourself in your career â€" and the best way to create a successful business. Gates responded by saying that he wished he had hired more people with a narrow but profound knowledge of a certain subject, like sales management. He thought he’d be able to handle something like that himself, but he was wrong. “I thought partly because of myself, or misperceptions of self, ‘Hey I can learn sales, what is that? Profit and loss, you take sales and subtract the losses…Do you need to go to biz school? I don’t think so,'” Gates said. “I didn’t have enough respect for different deep knowledge. I didn’t have enough respect for good management, what really good management is.” It’s essentially Gates’ description of the fox and hedgehog parable, most famously put forward by philosopher Isaiah Berlin. The fox is clever, knows a little bit about many things, and can survive in different environments. But the hedgehog, who knows a lot about doing one thing, can do that one thing extraordinarily well and end up enjoying a deeper level of success. While foxes merely get by, hedgehogs can accomplish incredible things that would be simply impossible if they were well-rounded. There remains some debate about which approach to one’s career is truly preferable, but Hoffman and Gates both believe in the hiring of hedgehogs for certain positions. In many cases, a manager should not be looking for generalists, or jacks of all trades, but specialists who are at the top of their specific fields.

3 Keys To Customizing Your Resume - Work It Daily

3 Keys To Customizing Your Resume - Work It Daily I’ve written a lot about the importance of investing time into every job application you submit, even if it means applying for fewer jobs. Related: 3 Secrets To A Powerful Resume Summary While it’s most efficient to get your resume fine-tuned to a point where it needs little modification for each new job application, you generally will need to make a few changes each time in order to customize your document. Keys To Customizing Your Resume Here are three customization tips for your resume: 1. Utilize Proper Language The first rule of customization is to ensure your resume contains the same language found in the job advertisement. Many companies use junior human resources staff as the first reviewers for the resumes they receive. Since HR staff typically know a lot about HR and less about the business of their company, they often look to match your resume with the keywords used in the job ad. This is why it’s important to customize your resume for an untrained eye; generally, the first person (or software program) looking it over is not discerning enough to know what you mean unless you use the exact same language. 2. Optimize Your Resume With Keywords For a job seeker who is looking at several different industries, matching keywords can be the most time consuming part of the process. For instance, someone with a background in nonprofit development may be looking at various nonprofit positions as well as opportunities in sales. Although both jobs essentially involve bringing in money for the employer, the nonprofit industry talks about “fund-raising” while the sales industry talks about “market share.” In order to save herself the hassle of changing the language of her resume every time she applies for a job, this job seeker would want to design both a standard nonprofit resume and a sales resume as the basic documents to work from for either type of job. 3. Put Important Details First Another way to customize your resume for a specific job opening is to construct the various sections of your resume in the same order as the items listed in the ad. For instance, if an advertisement says, “Seeking licensed master’s level social worker for clinical supervisor,” then your resume should display your academic degrees and social work license near the top. Employers generally use their ads to tell you what they’re looking forâ€"so don’t make it hard for them to find it! As you start or continue your job search process, keep a standard resume on hand for each industry in which you’re looking, and adjust the keywords and section order as needed. Employers will appreciate it! This post was originally published at an earlier date. This 4 Step Guide to Curing Imposter Syndrome Changed My Life

This 4 Step Guide to Curing Imposter Syndrome Changed My Life If you were to take one thing from this article, I hope it is this the way you speak to yourself is affecting every aspect of your life, not just your career trajectory. But for now, lets abflug there.Last year, I was asked to speak on the topic of Imposter Syndrome, something I am sure many of you have grappled with. Imposter Syndrome, in a nutshell, is contrary self-speak. Its a phenomenon commonly experienced by high achieving professionals. The individual feels as though her achievements are due to luck, not her talent, hard-work or expertise and that at any moment, she is liable to be exposed as a fraud. While researching Imposter Syndrome, what struck me most was how many people are affected by the notion they are undeserving of their accomplishments (a recent study by the grenzberschreitend Journal of Behavioral Science estimates upwards of 70% ). While I do believe Imposter Syndrome and job-related insecurity are p art of a more significant discussion around workplace culture (namely why it is successful women feel as though it is all about to crumble beneath them or worse they are lucky to merely acquire a seat at the table), progress is most easily achieved at the individual level. The first way to correct Imposter Syndrome (or any negative self-talk) is to acknowledge it. Often, we are so used to the story we have been telling ourselves that it has become part of the internal narrative that plays on a loop in our mind. I encourage you to ask yourself if there is a lie or story you have been speaking into existence (this practice can extend beyond beliefs around work or your career). Perhaps it is that you are undeserving of a raise for any myriad of reasons, or that you are not qualified for a job because you cannot allren every box in the requirements section, or that the person who is up for the same promotion will surely get it as they have been working longer than you.Next, write it dow n. I think it is essential to have a visual of the story you have been telling yourself something about actually having to write it down often exposes its frivolity.Once written, ask yourself do I know this to be true? Meaning can you unequivocally verify that what you have written about yourself is correct? Alternatively, is it a story you have concocted, and are unable to prove? If you have been able to identify the story is fiction, it is now time to create a new loop in your mind. As with breaking any habit, it will demand you are patient and forgiving of yourself while you establish new patterns. Heres an exampleOld loop I cant apply for that job I only have an Associates degree and three years related work experience.New loop I am confident my unique work experience and broad skill set would be ideal for this job. I am so excited to submit my resume. When you catch the old doubt creeping in acknowledge it. Ask if it is true, and then immediately rephrase it to a positive stat ement. On occasion, our negative self-speak is warranted. Perhaps we did not show up for ourselves or our colleagues in a way that demonstrated the full capacity of our ability.Rather than letting a singular experience become a new narrative or global belief about our capabilities, learn from it instead. For exampleNegative self-speak That meeting was a disaster. Completely cringeworthy. My teammates and the client now know I am a total failure.Constructive self-speak That meeting was indeed not my best performance, but I did learn next time I need to create more time for run-throughs and to book the conference room a half-hour early to ensure I am feeling thoroughly prepared.Ive discovered that the negative beliefs I once held about myself served as a sort of armor against potential failure. They were a leash that prevented me from straying too far out of my comfort zone, thereby remaining safe or stagnant. It is through launching the constellations, my female-first recruitment ag ency, and building my business that Ive come to understand that holding onto negative beliefs cannot and will not lend itself to growth. --
